Eight-month-old baby rescued alive from pit latrine in Apac

Police in Apac District have launched investigations into a suspected attempted murder after an unidentified baby girl was rescued alive from a pit latrine at Apac Pride Nursery and Primary School in Temogo A Cell, Temogo Ward, Arocha Division, Apac Municipality.

According to North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema, the shocking incident was reported in the early hours of Saturday, May 24, 2026, at around 3:32 a.m. by the school watchman, 23-year-old Eling Brian.

Police said the watchman heard persistent cries coming from the school toilet area at about 3:00 a.m. Upon checking, he suspected that a child had been trapped inside the pit latrine and immediately alerted officers at Apac Central Police Station.

A team of police officers responded to the scene and confirmed that a baby was inside the pit latrine.

The District Police Commander, Norah Mirembe, coordinated with the North Kyoga Police Fire and Rescue Services to conduct an emergency rescue operation.

“The joint rescue team, led by SP Ouni together with officers from Apac CPS, successfully retrieved the baby girl alive from the pit latrine” Okema added.

The infant, believed to be about eight months old, was rushed to Apac Main Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment and care.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the school is a private institution offering nursery to Primary Four education with no perimeter fence and that the pit latrine openings are wide and easily accessible.

Statements have already been recorded from the school director, Sarah Ayugi, and the watchman who reported the incident.

Okema said the identity of the child’s parents or guardians remains unknown, and no suspect has been arrested so far.

Investigators suspect the act could be linked to domestic violence or child neglect, although the motive has not yet been established.

A case of attempted murder has since been registered as investigations continue.

Okema urged members of the public with information that could help identify the child or those responsible to report to the nearest police station.

Authorities also strongly condemned child neglect and violence against children, calling on the public to seek lawful and humane ways of handling family or domestic challenges.
