Twenty amputees from the Lango Sub-region have taken their first steps toward renewed independence after receiving free prosthetic limbs through a partnership between Suman Foundation and Lira Regional Referral Hospital.

The beneficiaries, who lost their limbs due to road traffic crashes, workplace accidents, diabetes-related complications, and severe infections, were fitted with customized prosthetic limbs by the Orthopedic Department at Lira Regional Referral Hospital before the devices were officially handed over on Friday, June 19, 2026.

The initiative seeks to restore mobility, dignity, and self-reliance for persons living with limb loss, enabling them to return to work, support their families, and actively participate in community life.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Suman Foundation Manager, Venkatesh Manepali, applauded the leadership and staff of Lira Regional Referral Hospital for their strong partnership in delivering prosthetic services to people in need.

“We are grateful for the collaboration and commitment demonstrated by Lira Regional Referral Hospital. Through this partnership, we have been able to reach individuals whose lives can be transformed through access to prosthetic care. Our goal is to restore hope, mobility, and opportunity to those living with disabilities,” Manepali said.

The prosthetic limbs were fitted and calibrated by the hospital’s Orthopedic Department under the leadership of Raphael Omodi, ensuring each beneficiary received a device suited to their individual needs.

Representing the Hospital Director, Hospital Administrator Emmanuel Ogwang thanked Suman Foundation for supporting patients who would otherwise struggle to access prosthetic services.

“Lira Regional Referral Hospital remains committed to working with development partners, charitable organizations and other stakeholders to expand access to quality healthcare services. We appreciate Suman Foundation for choosing to support our patients and communities through this life-changing intervention,” Ogwang said.

Several beneficiaries described the prosthetic limbs as life-changing, saying they had regained confidence and hope after months or years of limited mobility.

They expressed gratitude to Suman Foundation and Lira Regional Referral Hospital, noting that the support would enable them to move more freely, earn a living, and participate fully in social and economic activities.
