Students pursuing Journalism and Mass Communication at All Saints University Lango have conducted a benchmark study tour at LivingStone International University aimed at enhancing their practical learning experience and professional capacity in media studies.

Speaking during the engagement, the Chancellor of LivingStone International University, Prof. Dr. Henri Buregea, emphasized that the core responsibility of journalists is to tell the truth and serve society with accurate information.

Buregea revealed that his passion for communication was shaped by personal experiences with misinformation published by some media outlets.

“Some media publications even wrote false stories claiming that I had bought a house I was only renting, and the story trended on social media for more than two days. That experience made me realize that information was not being used responsibly, and it inspired me to go back and study communication so as to bridge the gap,” Buregea said.

He described communication as a powerful tool that shapes communities and urged journalism students not to undermine themselves while serving society.
“My students, I urge you to stick to the ethical rules of journalism and avoid taking money to spread false information against others. This destroys your reputation and compromises your work,” he emphasized.

Buregea further revealed that the collaboration between All Saints University Lango and LivingStone International University will continue through academic exchange programs.

“We shall take our students to attend lectures at All Saints University Lango, and All Saints should also continue bringing their students to attend lectures at our university,” he added.

The Chancellor further revealed that the university is in the final stages of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lango Cultural Institution aimed at providing affordable scholarship opportunities to the people of Lango in order to enhance education capacity and skills development in the region.

The Dean of Students for Journalism and Media Technique at LivingStone International University, John Kauka, said the institution aims at equipping students with diverse knowledge in leadership, mentorship, worship, and community transformation.

Kauka encouraged students to continue upgrading their academic qualifications to acquire more knowledge and remain competitive in the journalism profession.
“Some students relax after obtaining certificates, diplomas, or degrees and refuse to continue with further studies, which is not good for students,” he said.

Meanwhile, Musumbi Hilary, a lecturer of Journalism and Media Technique, cautioned students against overreliance on Artificial Intelligence in academic work, saying it is making learners less creative and innovative.
“We should use AI to help us find solutions to problems, but not to solve the problems entirely for us,” he emphasized.

Mustafiri A. Suwed the head of departments for journalism and mass communication at All Saint University Lango said the university is committed to training journalists holistically to enable them effectively serve and transform their communities.

He explained that the major purpose of the field study tour was to expose students to practical media operations beyond classroom theory.
“We do not have a fully established studio, and bringing our students here helps them experience practically what they are taught in class,” Suwed explained.

He added that last year he took students to Uganda Broadcasting Corporation where they also gained practical broadcasting experience.

Suwed pledged to continue organizing study tours as long as students remain willing to support the initiative.

Students who participated in the study tour described the experience as insightful and transformative.

Calvin Otim, a Bachelor’s degree student, said they had an opportunity to experience modern television production equipment and facilities that they had previously only studied in theory.

“We got a rare opportunity to engage one-on-one with the Vice Chancellor of LivingStone International University about the importance of communication, and it has encouraged us to become agents of positive change in society,” Otim said.

Violet Sanyu, who is pursuing a certificate in Journalism and Mass Communication, said the students acquired hands-on skills in camera operation, television production, and broadcasting.

“My main interest in journalism and mass communication is television production, and the experience gained from LivingStone International University has enhanced my capacity and improved my knowledge,” she said.

After the engagement at LivingStone International University, the students proceeded to Busia for a cross-border exposure visit aimed at helping them explore a different environment and broaden their understanding of society beyond Uganda.
