Police in Lira City have arrested more than 100 suspects in a major intelligence-led operation targeting rising criminal activity in the area.
According to the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, Patrick Jimmy Okema, the operation was carried out on the night of April 21, 2026, in Boke and Angwetangwet zones within Lira City East Division.
The crackdown, commanded by the Division Police Commander (DPC), followed a surge in crimes including motorcycle robberies, burglaries, rape and other violent offences.
Okema said the operation, backed by intelligence networks, led to the apprehension of the suspects who are currently detained in police custody pending further processing.
Police also recovered several suspected exhibits from the suspects, including pangas, housebreaking implements and master keys believed to have been used to break into homes.
“All suspects are facing charges related to possession of housebreaking implements,” Okema stated.
He added that police are planning a public screening exercise in collaboration with local leaders to help identify habitual offenders and victims before compiling case files for submission to the Resident City State Attorney (RCSA) for legal guidance.
The spokesperson emphasized that the operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Uganda Police Force to curb crime and restore public safety in the region.
Police have since called on members of the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by sharing information that can help prevent and combat crime.
