Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) has reaffirmed its ambition to become one of Uganda’s leading public health facilities, with hospital leadership calling for greater teamwork, professionalism and compassion to improve healthcare services across the Lango sub-region.
The renewed commitment was unveiled on Wednesday during the hospital’s inaugural Prayer Breakfast held under the theme, “Delivering Quality Healthcare through Hard Work and Compassion.” The event brought together hundreds of hospital staff, members of the top management team and religious leaders from across Lango, including Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of West Lango Rt. Rev. Alfred Alex Acur Okodi, Rev. Fr. Dr. Peter Clever Ongom, Rev. Thomas Obong, Sheikh Yusuf Balinda, Rev. Silvanus Ogwal, Prof. Opio Okaka Dokotum and Senior Pastor Paul Egwar.
Presiding over the service, The Bishop Emeritus of Diocese of West Lango Alfred Acur Okodi applauded the hospital management for introducing the annual prayer breakfast, describing it as a timely opportunity for reflection and spiritual renewal. He challenged health workers to embrace teamwork, saying quality healthcare can only be achieved when every member of staff works towards a common goal.
He reminded doctors, nurses, administrators and support staff that the medical profession is a sacred calling entrusted with restoring lives and giving hope to patients.
“No one can transform this hospital alone. Sustainable progress will only come when doctors, nurses, administrators and religious leaders work together in unity to serve the people,” Bishop Acur said.
The General Secretary of the Lango Religious Leaders Forum, Rev. Thomas Obong, reinforced the message, urging staff to value collective responsibility over individual recognition.
“No one is a hero alone. We succeed by working together, appreciating each person’s contribution and remaining committed to the mission before us,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the hospital management, Acting Hospital Director Dr. Andrew Odur said the prayer breakfast was conceived as a platform to thank God for the milestones the hospital has achieved while dedicating staff and the institution to God’s guidance ahead of the 2026/27 financial year.
Dr. Odur noted that in its more than 100 years of existence, Lira Regional Referral Hospital has witnessed tremendous growth in infrastructure, staffing and specialised healthcare services, positioning it among the country’s fast-improving referral hospitals.
He revealed that the facility now conducts more than 300,000 laboratory tests annually, performs over 10,000 surgical operations each year and offers more than 200 dialysis sessions every month, reflecting the increasing demand for specialised medical care in the region.

Odur highlighted the success of the hospital’s newly operational Intensive Care Unit (ICU), saying patients who previously had little chance of survival are now receiving lifesaving treatment.
“We are steadily building a hospital that can compete with the best in Uganda. We ask the public, religious leaders and our partners to continue supporting us spiritually and morally as we strengthen healthcare services for our people,” Dr. Odur said.
