The opposition Uganda Peoples Congress has distanced itself from the appointment of Oyam Woman member of parliament, Santa Sandra Alum as Minister of State in the Office of the President in charge of Economic Monitoring.
In a statement signed by party president Jimmy Akena, UPC said it was neither consulted nor engaged regarding the appointment announced in the cabinet reshuffle released on May 26, 2026.
The party clarified that Hon. Santa Alum’s acceptance of the ministerial position should be treated as a personal decision and not one made on behalf of the party.
Akena further explained that although it had previously submitted a proposed framework for possible future political engagement with the ruling National Resistance Movement, no formal cooperation agreement or working partnership currently exists between the two parties.
According to the statement, discussions between UPC and NRM remain subject to consultations, mutual agreement, and resolution of outstanding issues the party considers necessary for meaningful engagement.
The party emphasized that it remains an independent opposition political party guided by constitutionalism, democratic governance, national unity, social justice, and people-centered development.
UPC also noted that it will continue advancing its policies and political positions through Parliament, public engagement, and its national party structures while maintaining cordial working relations with other leaders across the political divide in the Twelfth Parliament.
The statement concluded by reiterating that official party positions and decisions can only be made through the constitutional organs and authorized processes of UPC.
