Security Raid on Anita Among’s Residence Deepens Political Tensions Ahead of Speakership Battle

A joint security operation led by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), alongside the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and other state security agencies, reportedly raided the residence of former Speaker Anita Annet Among in Nakasero on Saturday afternoon as part of widening investigations into alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering.

According to sources, the operation involved detectives, military intelligence officers, and forensic investigators who conducted extensive searches at the premises while examining documents and property believed to be linked to the former Speaker.

The raid marks one of the most dramatic developments yet in the escalating political and legal pressure surrounding Among, whose name has recently dominated discussions linked to the race for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament.

The latest development comes shortly after Inspector General of Government Aisha Batala Nalule confirmed that her office had officially opened investigations into allegations that Among violated the Leadership Code Act through undeclared wealth and unexplained assets.

The complaint, reportedly filed by a group of lawyers and activists, seeks scrutiny into Among’s wealth declarations, assets, and sources of income amid growing public debate over her lavish lifestyle and reports of expensive acquisitions, including a luxury Rolls-Royce vehicle allegedly imported from the United Kingdom.

The unfolding investigation is also taking place against the backdrop of intensifying political tensions within the ruling National Resistance Movement and the Patriotic League of Uganda led by Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

In recent days, Muhoozi has posted a series of strongly worded statements condemning corruption and extravagant spending by public officials, remarks widely interpreted by political observers as indirect criticism of Among.

“Our job is to serve Ugandans, not ourselves. I cannot support corruption,” Muhoozi wrote earlier this week, adding that the country “will not be taken by thieves.”

Security sources further claim that state agencies have become increasingly concerned about the influence of money in the looming Speakership race, with reports suggesting that some powerful figures within the establishment are backing Defence Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth for the top parliamentary seat.

The raid also follows the reported arrest of Justine Nameere Nsubuga on Friday night. The Masaka City Woman MP had publicly defended Among and reportedly clashed online with PLU Secretary General Daudi Kabanda before being picked up by security operatives in Masaka.

By Saturday evening, neither CID nor the UPDF had issued an official statement regarding the operation, and it remained unclear whether any arrests had been made or if property had been seized during the search.

The latest developments are expected to intensify political tensions within Uganda’s establishment as the battle for control of Parliament enters a critical stage.
