Museveni appoints Muyingo acting education minister as First Lady remains away from public domain

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed John Chrysostom Muyingo as Acting Minister of Education and Sports, according to a State House press release issued on Thursday June 25th, 2026.

The appointment comes amid the prolonged absence of First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni from official duties.

While State House has not publicly disclosed details regarding her condition, reports indicate that she has been undergoing treatment for an illness.

The development is likely to fuel public interest regarding the status of Janet Museveni, who has not been seen at official functions for an extended period. Although government has not issued a formal statement on her health, reports indicate that she has been receiving treatment for an illness.

Muyingo’s appointment places him at the helm of one of Uganda’s most critical ministries at a time when the education sector is grappling with challenges ranging from funding constraints to curriculum implementation and quality concerns.

The acting appointment also marks another significant milestone in Muyingo’s political career.

He was recently appointed State Minister for Higher Education and now assumes broader responsibility for the entire education sector following the President’s latest directive.

In the statement, President Museveni said the appointment takes immediate effect.
