The National Drug Authority (NDA) has expressed concern over the increasing levels of drug abuse and alcohol consumption among young people in the Lango sub-region, warning that the trend is fueling crime, ill health, and social instability.
Speaking today Thursday June 25th 2026 during an awareness session for contestants preparing for the Miss Tourism Northern Uganda pageant at Lira Hotel, NDA spokesperson Fred Kabuye said the misuse of drugs and excessive alcohol consumption remain widespread in the region despite ongoing efforts to address the problem.
Kabuye noted that substance abuse has become a major public health concern, contributing to various illnesses and increasing cases of criminal behavior among young people.
“Many individuals under the influence of alcohol and drugs make decisions they would not ordinarily make while sober, which often leads to conflict and criminal activities,” he said.
He further revealed that alcohol consumption is increasingly common among school going children and young adults.
This he said has prompted the NDA to intensify community sensitization campaigns in schools and other public spaces.
According to Kabuye, the Authority plans to work closely with cultural leaders, religious institutions, and community stakeholders to educate young people about the dangers associated with drug abuse and irresponsible alcohol consumption.

Meanwhile, Miss Tourism Northern Uganda coordinator Gloria Alele said the awareness session was aimed at equipping contestants with knowledge that will enable them to become ambassadors against drug abuse and alcohol misuse in their communities.
“We believe these young women can play a vital role in spreading awareness and encouraging positive behavioral change among their peers,” Alele said.
Some of the contestants who attended the training urged fellow youth to avoid peer pressure that often leads to alcohol and drug abuse. They also appealed to those already struggling with addiction to seek professional help and support in order to rebuild their lives.
The Miss Tourism Northern Uganda competition is scheduled to take place on June 27th 2026 at Lavington Park in Lira City, with 13 contestants competing for the regional crown.
