IGAD, AU observer Missions Coordinate ahead of Ethiopia’s general election

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The Head of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development Election Observation Mission to Ethiopia, Speciosa Wandira Kazibwe, has met with Uhuru Kenyatta, who leads the African Union Election Observation Mission, ahead of Ethiopia’s 7th General Election.

The meeting, held in Addis Ababa on May 31, 2026, focused on preparations for the upcoming polls, including the exchange of pre-election assessments and coordination of observer deployment plans.

The two Heads of Mission also discussed the process for releasing their preliminary post-election findings, underscoring the importance of timely and credible election observation.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process, emphasizing the role of regional and continental observer missions in promoting democratic governance and public confidence in the election outcome.

The engagement comes as international and regional observers intensify preparations to monitor Ethiopia’s 7th General Election, a key democratic exercise for the country and the wider Horn of Africa region.
